An Interview with W.R. Gingell

Intrepid Readers!

Welcome to the world that hides Between, where that old, disused door in the side of a building could lead to the world Behind and certain death, and an umbrella might just be a sword…

You’ll meet a human girl whose only name is Pet, the three Behindkind with whom she eventually joins forces, and the human detective who just wants to know what the heck is going on these days.

The Behindkind tend to think of humans as barely more intelligent than animals, but there’s a lot more to Pet than they’re prepared to admit—and perhaps more than Pet is willing to admit, too.

Where darkness throws into relief the light and good, and heartache and hope are mixed together, Pet will walk a razor edge of shadow between worlds.

I trust you’re prepared not just for blood and gore, but the occasional touch of sweetness that is the world Between…

Happy Reading!

An Interview with W.R.

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! I’m W.R. Gingell! I read a bit of pretty much everything, and consequently write a little bit of everything, though everything I write would fall under the headings of clean and noblebright. I began with rewritten fairytales (my first love) and went on to science fiction, a tiny smattering of horror, and now urban fantasy, where I’m currently beheading, poisoning, and stabbing characters with considerably more gusto than expected. I live in Tasmania, Australia, but I’m planning on traveling very soon…

What does noblebright fantasy mean to you? Why is it important?

Noblebright fantasy is important to me because it shows, through the medium of books, or film, or radio, that there are interesting and complex good guys, that doing the right thing isn’t something to be mocked, and that women as well as men have the

calling to be good and strong against the odds. And because it shows that with men as well as women, gentleness and kindness aren’t weaknesses.

To me, noblebright fantasy is fantasy that feeds my soul as well as my imagination and my mind. I want to be uplifted and amazed by characters—I want to see characters doing the right thing at the cost of everything. I want to emotionally connect with characters who may not always do the right thing but who are growing; characters who sincerely try to do what’s right, who can make me sigh with delight at the beauty of their heart.

There’s enough horror and hopelessness and despair in the world—I don’t want to feed my soul with it any more than I have to.

How did you start writing?

I started writing because I was reading so much, and still not finding enough stories that I wanted to read. When I was in primary school until I got my first job, I was reading 1-2 books most days. Because of the sheer amount I was reading, I began to hone my taste and discover what I liked and didn’t like—and to find, in some dismay, that there were nowhere near enough books that I liked in the world.

So I decided I would write them.

Also, I didn’t have that many friends that weren’t imaginary or Shakespeare, so there was that, too.

What are some of your favourite books/authors? Why?

Jane Austen, of course (if you need to know why, we can’t be friends…)

Anthony Trollope (convoluted, immersive, hilarious), Steven Brust (assassin on the run with sarcastic shoulder dragon, the master of amazing story structure), Patricia Wrede (simplicity and thoroughly immersive worldbuilding, plus regency magic, heck yes), Elizabeth Pope (dark, magical, savage, utterly terrifying), Kate Stradling (simplicity of style, plus her characters—her themes! Sigh! I want to be Kate when I grow up), Intisar Khanani (her heroines, her settings, the feels), and Meredith Allady (almost

Jane Austen, but with slightly more sarcasm and one of my all time favourite male and female leads in her Summer in Bath—plus! Epistolary! Style!)

Please tell us about your world and your characters.

The world of the City Between series is just like the real world—almost. Set mostly in Hobart, Tasmania, it shares nearly all of the same features and characteristics as real Hobart, with just a bit extra. This bit extra is called Between, a section of the world that isn’t quite real world, but isn’t the fae world, either—a kind of bridge between the human world and the world of the fae. Not exactly a real place, always in flux, always dangerous.

Between is described by my main character, Pet, in this way: “…if you’ve ever driven up to the crest of the southern outlet just before you get into Hobart and thought the skyline looked like a castle for just the blink of an eye before it turned back into a normal city skyline, and thought you’d just imagined it—

You didn’t.

You just got a sight of Hobart Between.

Places aren’t what they seem to be, and neither are things when it comes to Between.”

Pet, a (kinda) streetwise orphan who lives in the house her parents were murdered in, is in fact not exactly Pet, but a pet.

For her owners, we have Zero, a big, silent fae who may or may not be royalty of some kind; Athelas, his softly spoken steward who always seems to be hiding a secret of some sort for the sheer mischief of it; and JinYeong, a vampire who alternates between pouting and fighting and is happily susceptible to most of the pranks an inventive pet can come up with…

Do you have any works in progress? Tell us about them!

I have very many works in progress…

It turns out that I’m the sort of writer who likes to have multiple projects on the go at any time, which is terribly untidy both physically and mentally. The two most important currently are the WiP I’m releasing serially in chapters to my newsletter (a KDrama inspired fantasy romance called Lady of Weeds that has selkies and

mysterious boys who appear out of the sea) and the third book in my urban fantasy series, Between Floors (3rd in line after Between Jobs) which is meant to release at Christmas.
